Origami Table
Origami Table
This table is part of an origami-inspired plywood furniture line; creating strength with hinged plywood the way paper folds create strength in origami. As an architect, I love the beauty of precise geometry and its ability to edify simple materials. The process for building this table is as follows: •Conceptual sketching
•The range of piano hinges is considered in conjunction with plywood.
•The table is modeled on the computer to confirm the hinges are compatible with the shape.
•The table model is "unrolled" so the pieces can be seen nested efficiently in a sheet of plywood for production.
•A milling toolpath is written. This includes recessed areas for the hinges.
•The hinges are hand-cut and the plywood facets are milled on a computer-controlled milling table.
The table depicted here is made from unfinished Latvian birch, 3/8" tempered glass and chrome-plated piano hinges. Alternate materials and hole cutouts are available upon request.
